HOOKED ON A CAUSE

There is a recent article about an artist who hung herself with hooks from a London shop ceiling to dramatise her protest against the act of shark finning. While shark's fin are being thrown into a steamy hot pot of boiled chicken stock together with its companies (crabmeat, ginger and a sprinkle of scallions) waiting to be served, ravenous consumers are clueless about the torturous and inhumane process of obtaining those fins. After every fin on their body are sliced off, sharks are thrown back into the ocean still ALIVE.

Ms Alice Newstead who pierced herself with hooks and hung like a shark said :" I am doing this because the demand for shark fin soup and other shark products is wiping out the shark population. I have had my torso, legs, arms, stomach and knees pierced before so that i could hang from them, so this is no big deal." By doing so, Ms Alice have actually used a mixture of logos and pathos which is appealing to reason and emotions to persuade her audience to abstain from eating shark's fin.

So dear readers, maybe it's time that we revise our menus and play a part in preventing the extinction of sharks.(:

hi emily,
What a drastic measure to take! Nevertheless, I feel that if such drastic actions are not taken, no one would feel the urgency to change.
I saw the documentary of how the fishermen obtained the sharks' fin. It was so cruel. I believe that the fins play a role in the shark's survival. The sharks were viewed as man-eater, yet, after the documentary, I sympathize with them. This time, they are the prey instead of the predator.
Ok,FROM NOW ONWARDS, NO more sharks fin for me no matter what.
(I was in the dark previously, but no longer. I just started to have a taste of it sometime earlier this year. It tasted delicious. Now my conscience is prickling me.) I shall heed your advise.

Ouch.

Her efforts were definitely not in vain. People did sit up and take notice! I guess she was appealing to the pathos of shark's-fin-consumers by giving them an idea of how a pained shark might have felt. Well, it made me cringe. It also questions the moral conscience of consumers. In my opinion, her approach was extremely effective. Simply because she created huge awareness for the topic and dispelled ignorance!

Now, people will think twice about shark's fin.
