CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

Perception is the process by which we make sense of the world around us. It is also the process of attaining awareness which is influenced by psychological and social factors.

In many ways, culture affects our perception. The indians recognize the colour RED as passion. It is a very significant colour to them and is frequently used for marriages, birth of a child and festivals. However, the chinese believes that RED is a lucky colour because it is the colour of blood and is associated with life. It represents fame, wealth, happiness and good luck. On the other hand, the japanese perceived RED as the colour for expelling demons and illnesses.

In addition, western culture view number 13 as a bad number as 13 is the exact number of full moons in a calendar year, and they have thought that the moon controls emotion and makes people a bit crazy. On the contrary, the chines culture perceived 13 as a lucky number because in Cantonese 13 means will, should, and will certainly live. Thus, when the chinese is faced with uncertainties, this is a comforting number.

One other example is that Mexicans celebrate the Day of The Dead which is also known as El Dia de los Muertos, a festival to honour the dead on November 1 every year. Celebration starts after sunset when everyone heads to the large Panteon Municipal (cemetry). The narrow path will be filled with people carrying enormous bunches of colourful flowers. Sugar skulls with sequin eyes and bread of the dead with a roll of a little wooden effigy baked into the dough will be displayed at the altar. There will be a carnival outside the cemetry which reflects Mexicans' attitude towards death. They belive that it is a part of life, humans will eventually die and they think that they might as well have fun with it. However, Asians consider the Day of The Dead as something not to be celebrated but instead, a time of solemn and mourning.

Perception is indeed powerful and phenomenal because no two individuals' perception are the same!(:
