SINGAPORE ESSENCE ANYONE?

US mass media industry is indeed the most important participant in the global mass media industry as many countries depend on it to meet their programming needs. Thus, US is the dominating exporter of TV programmes.

Cultural imperialism is known as the one-way flow of international messages or media products, especially news and television flows, from a few metropolises that has led to the disputes over cultural dominance. Flow is a deliberate attempt to alter or maintain a balance of power that is beneficial to only developed countries. It is also a reflection of the current unjust world in the political and economical structure and a product of money and power. In addition, flow benefits the West as developing and smaller nations do not have a comparative advantage in the international media market. Too much importation of communication hardware and foreign-produced software with a set of foreign norms and values will most likely change the country's culture and socialisation process.

Singapore is a great example of a country that is heavily dependent on importing US media products. I must say that through the years, Singapore has truly been influenced by US culture in one way or another. Research has shown that the younger generation in Singapore is no longer as conservative compared to their older counterparts. They are getting more westernised in their speech, thoughts and actions. The foreign TV programmes that are shown in Singapore, such as America's next top model and American idol has shaped their self concept and perspectives. Therefore, it causes them to be motivated or aspired to chase their "idol" dreams. Hence, too much imports of such foreign products can really cause a huge damage to the cultural identity of Singapore.

Preserve before it's too late.(:

i agree that there may be too many american programs dominating our local television and it has sort of eroded our culture in some sense. but is our local media capable of producing shows to capture our local audience, there have been several attempts but apparently all the programs produced by singapore have not really been popular among the tv viewers here. i feel that our local shows like the creativity as well as excitement that those americans show brings to entertain tv audience, thus i feel that only when singapore media is capable to produce its own programs that can capture us tv audience interest, then we would have the ability to reduce the influx of american programs on our local tv
